In February 2018, a discussion paper was released that outlined a proposed model for the establishment of Infrastructure WA. Public consultation was open for 6 weeks and 83 submissions were received.

On 14 June 2019, Premier Mark McGowan announced that the Infrastructure Western Australia Bill 2019 had successfully passed through the Western Australian Parliament.

Infrastructure WA, which was a key election commitment of the McGowan Government and part of its 'Plan for Jobs', will prepare the State's first long-term infrastructure plan. The passing of the Infrastructure WA Bill 2019 cleared the way for the statutory body to be established and start the important work on preparing its 20-year strategy, which will outline what infrastructure is needed for our growing State.

Infrastructure WA was established under the Infrastructure Western Australia Act 2019, with its principal purpose to provide advice and assistance to the WA Government on matters relating to infrastructure.

IWA’s core functions are summarised below:

The Board is the governing body responsible for Infrastructure WA's strategic direction and operations. The Board comprises an independent Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and eight Board members. The Board provides strategic policy direction and oversight for planning, management and performance. With a mix of leading business people with expertise in infrastructure and the State's most senior public servants, the Board brings together the experience required to guide Infrastructure WA's important work.
